West Oaks Mall Farmer’s Market: A Fresh, Local Experience with a Twist
This past weekend, the West Oaks Mall welcomed a new attraction: its very own indoor Farmer’s Market, an exciting addition to the local scene that promises to bring fresh flavors and community vibes to this iconic location. I had the chance to chat with Greg, the market's visionary organizer, and a handful of vendors who make this event truly unique.
A Fresh Take on Farmer’s Markets
Why hold a farmer’s market inside a mall? Greg, the organizer, made the reasoning clear: "We live in Florida, and you never know how the weather's going to go." He pointed to the usual struggles of outdoor markets, from sweltering heat to sudden downpours. “If we were outside right now, everyone would be packing up. But in here, it’s rain or shine, and people can enjoy the AC.”
Greg’s excitement was contagious as he described his goals for the market. With around 9 or 10 vendors already participating and live music setting the tone, he’s optimistic about the future. “Hopefully, we can take over the whole mall,” he grinned. For Greg, this isn’t just about commerce but also about reviving the mall and supporting small businesses. “I used to come here as a kid… I'm just trying to bring some life back in here.”
Local Flavors and Unique Finds
A highlight of the market is its diverse range of vendors, each bringing something special. From the beloved “Ocoee Cake Lady,” known for her cakes and cookies in a jar, to Sarah Quintero’s mobile coffee cart, blending her passion for books and coffee, there's something for everyone. Sarah, who juggles her love of coffee with her work as a realtor, shared her long-term goal of hosting more private events and offering packages like “Blind Dates with a Book,” combining books with themed drinks.
Then, there’s “Juilliard Novella Creations,” a vendor offering candles, wax melts, and car diffusers. “It’s a nice change from being outside all the time,” the owner said about setting up indoors. She highlighted the variety of scents she offers, from essential oils like grapefruit and mint to clean fragrance oils. Her diffusers are perfect for both cars and small spaces, adding a decorative touch along with the fresh scent.
Handmade, Artisanal Goods Lola's Artesanías offers handmade goods straight from Mexico, ranging from jewelry to bags and even journals that encourage creativity. "Everything’s unique," she explained, pointing out that no two items are the same. From butterfly earrings to dreamcatcher bracelets, Lola’s booth is full of vibrant, handcrafted treasures. "We’re hoping more people come out as the weekends progress," she said, embodying the persistence and optimism of these passionate vendors.
Music to Your Ears
Live music filled the air, courtesy of Jordan Mohr, a local singer-songwriter who’s no stranger to the spotlight. Having been nominated for two Josie Awards—held at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville—Jordan brought her original music to the market. “The whole experience has been super smooth. They’re great at what they do, and I’m excited to be here more,” she shared. Whether playing solo or with her full band, she’s thrilled to be part of this growing community.
A Local Gem in the Making
The West Oaks Mall Farmer’s Market is not only a unique concept but also a promising one. Greg and the vendors aim to make this market a staple in the community, drawing in crowds with its inviting atmosphere, variety of goods, and the undeniable comfort of an indoor setting. As Greg aptly put it, "I think it’s a beautiful idea, and I just want it to grow."
The West Oaks Mall Farmer’s Market runs every Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 6 PM. Whether you’re looking to indulge in a fresh local treat, find a unique handmade gift, or enjoy live entertainment, this is the place to be.
